Generally, I think it is a form of idol worship. We stop seeing celebrities are everyday people. They are placed on such high pedestals that they appear like gods to some. People want information like that they're wearing, what they prefer to eat, and most importantly, the scandals. This makes them more human and fallible. In a way, it boosts their egos. And, essentially, our egos are the most vital element. I predict that subconsciously people are slightly jealous of this veneer of perfection and smile inside when they read about such-and-such's affair and divorce.
